Two cops remanded in Abu Sayeed murder case

A Rangpur court on Tuesday placed police members Amir Hossain and Sujon Chandra Rain on four-day remand each in a case filed over the death of Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayeed during the quota reform movement.

Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Tajhat Amli Court passed the order as police produced the two of them before the court and pleaded for a five-day remand each for proper investigation.

On July 16, protesters marched 5 kilometres through the Rangpur city to Begum Rokeya University, with Sayeed joining them. He was a student coordinator of the quota reform movement.

Clashes erupted with quota supporters, and police fired rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. 

Despite the chaos, Sayeed stood firm, refusing to budge. 

At one point, he was shot in the chest and fell to the ground. He was immediately taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead.
