Ctg city corporation polls declared invalid

A court in Chattogram has declared invalid the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls held in January of 2021.  Additionally, Dr Shahadat Hossain, the mayoral candidate of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for the CCC polls, was declared the new mayor. 

The court of First Joint Session Judge and Judge of the Election Tribunal Khairul Amin gave the verdict at around noon on Tuesday. A government gazette notification in this regard is to be issued within 10 days, the court ordered. 

Dr Shahadat Hossain filed a case with the Election Tribunal in Chittagong on 24 February 2021, demanding re-election through declaring a new schedule.

A total of nine people including the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Election Commission Secretary, CCC Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Chittagong Regional Election Officer, and CCC Returning Officer Mohammad Hasnuzzaman were made accused in the case.
