Transport workers block Rangpur-Dhaka Highway to protest extortion, harassment

Truck drivers and workers have gathered on the Rangpur-Dhaka Highway to protest extortion and harassment by highway police. 

They blocked the road at noon for more than an hour on Tuesday, causing immense suffering to the locals. Trucks were parked diagonally on the highway to cause the blockade. Members of the army and police later arrived and assured them of resolving the problem by the day, which prompted the workers to lift the block. 

Truck drivers and workers alleged that police extort money from trucks in the name of examining their documents and that no measures to remedy the situation have been taken yet.
