Massive fire burns several resorts on Saint Martin's Island

Three resorts in Saint Martin's Island were razed to the ground in a massive fire early on Wednesday. 

No casualties were reported in the incident. Locals claim that the lack of proper firefighting equipment caused the damage. 

Saint Martin's Island Union Chairman Mujibur Rahman said the fire originated at the Golachipa area of the west beach on the island at around 2:30am. 

At first, a fire broke out in the Shayori Resort. From there, the fire also spread to Beach Vally and Kingshuk Resorts. Around 30 rooms burnt down. 

According to local Nur Mohammad, the Coast Guard, Navy, Tourist Police, and BGB members worked to control the fire. 

The fire was brought under control within an hour and a half, Teknaf-2 BGB Vice Captain Major Ishtiak Ahmed said. However, the cause of the fire could not be ascertained. 

Claiming that the fire could not be controlled in time due to the absence of fire service, local Abul Kalam urged the government to build a fire station on the island.
