Terrorist attack on headmaster in Patia

Shyamal Kanti Dey, headmaster of Eidgaon High School in Patia upazila of Chattogram was viciously attacked by a group of 6-7 terrorists while heading to school on BOC Road in the municipal area at approximately 9:30 am on Thursday.

The assailants, armed with country-made weapons, intercepted Dey’s CNG-powered auto-rickshaw, forcibly removed him, and beat him severely, leaving him critically injured and bloodied on the ground.

Two teachers, Tania Yasmin and Pratna Barua, who were accompanying Dey, along with local residents, intervened to rescue him and brought him to the school. 

He was subsequently rushed to Patia Upazila Health Complex by ambulance. 

Dr. Sadia Sultana, attending physician, said that due to the severity of his injuries, Dey was referred to a hospital in Chattogram for advanced treatment. 

Assistant Commissioner (Land) Roya Tripura visited the health complex to check on Dey’s condition.

The attack sparked outrage in the local community, leading to a protest march. 

Patia police deployed forces to the school to maintain order. 

Dey said that he had been targeted previously, citing an ongoing dispute over the appointment of the school president. He had received multiple death threats and filed two general diaries with Patia police station for his safety.

Officer-in-Charge Nuruzzaman of Patia police station confirmed that legal proceedings are underway, with police actively working to identify and apprehend the attackers. 

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Farhanur Rahman stated that both police and army have been notified, and a formal case will be filed based on Dey’s prior general diary. 

Authorities are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
