Cumilla road crash: Police seize Hanif Paribahan bus

Police have seized a Hanif Paribahan bus which was going the wrong way, causing a road accident that took four lives in Cumilla on Friday. 

The bus was seized from the grounds in front of Khadghar Manama Hotel in Debidwar Upazila on Sunday afternoon, Moynamoti Highway Police Officer in Charge Iqbal Bahar confirmed the matter to the Daily Samakal. 

A private car was crushed when a covered van fell on top of it, killing four members of a family. The accident occurred on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway's Uttor Rampur U-turn area of Cumilla at around 12:30pm on Friday. The four deceased were identified as Mohammad Omar Ali, 80, his wife Nurjahan Begum, 65, their sons Abul Hashem, 50, and Abul Kashem, 45. Abul Hashem was driving the car. The family was from Mudafforganj of Laksam Upazila.

The car was taking a U-turn when the Dhaka-bound covered van toppled and crushed the car and an autorickshaw, causing casualties. The van was trying to avoid colliding with the bus coming from the opposite side, going the wrong way. 

OC Iqbal Bahar said the bus was identified upon checking the CCTV footage of Friday's accident. As per the footage, the cement-laden covered van lost control and fell on the car because of the bus coming the wrong way. 

He also said that the bus driver and assistant both went into hiding after the incident. A drive is underway to detain them. 

A case was filed in this connection. Drivers of the covered van and the bus are among the accused.
