Student-local clash injured more than 50 at CU

A clash between locals and the students of the Chattogram University (CU) has injured at least 60 students at the CU gate number 2. Among them, around 21 were sent to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment. Some of them were admitted to the neurosurgery department. 

The bloodied students were brought to the hospital's emergency department early on Sunday. 

CU student Dipayan Deb said at least three students with head injuries were admitted to the neurosurgery department. Among them are Chhatra Majlish leader Sakib Mahmud Rumi. Doctors have said they are out of danger, but are still kept under intensive observation. 

After the clash, the CU authority has halted all examinations on Sunday. 

CU Pro-VC (Admin) Dr Md Kamal Uddin said the exams were postponed considering the security of students and the prevailing situation. Once the situation is brought under control, decisions regarding the exams will be announced. 

According to locals, a female student was late in returning to her room, and a verbal altercation with the guard at CU gate number 2 started. The guard allegedly gathered some people and attacked the student. After that, some students gathered and tried to catch the guard, escalating the situation. A round of chase and counter-chase ensued, while the two parties hurled brickbats at each other.
