Law enforcers clash with workers after factory shuts down, 1 dead

RMG workers have clashed with members of law enforcement agencies in the Uttara Export Processing Zone (EPZ), resulting in the death of a worker. 

The deceased worker was identified as Habib Islam, 32, son of Dulal Hossain of Kazirhat of Songolshi Union under Nilphamari Sadar. 

According to workers, a company called Evergreen recently cut jobs. Workers have been protesting for the last two days with various demands. The factory authority suddenly announced that it was shutting down on Monday night. As a result, incensed workers put the EPZ under lock and key on Tuesday morning. 

Centring this incident, members of the law enforcement agencies had several clashes with the workers. This situation escalated after the news of a worker's death spread. Traffic stopped on the Nilphamari-Syedpur road. 

Confirming the worker's death, Nilphamari General Hospital emergency department's duty doctor, Tanzirul Islam Farhan, told the Daily Samakal that the deceased man had a wound on his chest, but more can only be said after a post-mortem. Eight other injured workers are now receiving treatment at the hospital. 

Nilphamari Sadar Police Station Officer in Charge, M R Sayed, told the media that police are still in the field. He could not confirm the news of a man dying in the clash.
