Section 144 imposed in Hathazari, police remain alert

A tense atmosphere prevails at Hathazari Upazila in Chattogram after vehicles were vandalised during an Eid-e-Miladunnabi Jashne Julus rally on Saturday. The Upazila authority has issued Section 144 in the area to keep the situation under control. 

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Muhammad Abdullah Al Mumin gave the directive on Saturday night. Section 144 will be in effect from Friday, 10pm to Saturday, 3pm. 

Sunni and Kowmi supporters clashed after a vehicle was attacked during the Jashne Julus rally in front of Hathazari Madrasah. As a result of the clash, traffic was halted on the Chattogram-Khagrachhari-Rangamati Highway till nearly 10:30pm. After Section 144 was imposed, members of the armed forces went to the spot and spoke to the two parties. Traffic became normal afterwards. 

While the situation improved, police remain alert. Hathazari Circle Addl Police Superintendent Kazi Md Tariq Aziz said qaemi madrasah students have gathered in front of their madrasahs, while Ahle Sunnah supporters have gathered at several roads.
