Day-long hartal underway in Begarhat, vehicles sparse

The Election Commission (EC) has decreased the number of seats in Bagerhat in the recent demarcation. A three-day hartal is underway in the district to protest the decision.

On Monday morning, Sorbodoliyo Sommilito Committee leaders and activists held a procession in front of the district's election official's office and DC office in support of the hartal. Their leaders and activists have also gathered at various locations in the district. 

Buses have not left the Bagerhat central bus terminal since Monday morning. Some business establishments have remained open. Motorcycles, easy bikes and rickshaws were seen on the highway and roads. 

The EC on September 4 issued a gazette notification publishing the final list of demarcation of the 300 parliamentary constituencies for the 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections. In the final demarcation, the number of seats stood at 6 in Gazipur with the increase of one seat, while the number reduced to 3 in Bagerhat, with the decrease of one seat.
