Bhanga UNO office vandalised, police station surrounded

Protesters have vandalised and torched the Bhanga UNO office and the election commission office over the redrawing of parliamentary constituencies. They have also surrounded the Bhanga Police station and lobbed brickbats at several police vehicles and army APCs. 

These incidents of vandalism were carried out in Faridpur's Bhanga shortly after 1pm on Monday. 

Several journalists were injured while trying to collect news. MyTV journalist Sarowar Hossain was hacked. Jamuna TV Bhanga Correspondent Abdul Mannan, among others, was also injured. They are now receiving treatment at the Bhanga Upazila Health Complex. 

Previously, protesters started blocking roads at around 10:30am using logs, electrical pillars, and burning tyres. Police tried to prevent them from blocking the roads, when rounds of chase and counter-chase ensued. 

In the afternoon, thousands of people from several unions of the upazila gathered and vandalised the official buildings. 

Confirming the matter, UNO Md Mizanur Rahman said none of the officials were attacked. However, he declined to comment further on the latest situation. 

Meanwhile, it was found that law enforcers and election commission officials are safe inside the police station and the traffic police office.
