Earthquake: Child dead, 2 injured in Narayanganj

A 10-month-old child died after a wall collapsed on her during an earthquake on Friday. Two others were injured in this incident in the Golakandail area of Rupganj Upazila in Narayanganj. 

The child was identified as Fatema, the daughter of Abdul Haque. Fatema's mother, Kulsum Begum and their neighbour Jesmin were also injured, Rupganj Police Station Officer in Charge Torikul Islam said. 

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck the capital city and several other parts of the country at 10:38 am today, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD). 

It said the epicentre of the quake was located at Madhabdi in Narsingdi, 13km east of the BMD Seismic Centre, Agargaon in Dhaka.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), however, confirmed that the epicentre was located 14 kilometres west-southwest of Narsingdi, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The sudden jolt prompted residents in many areas of Dhaka to rush outdoors in panic. The tremor lasted only a few seconds, but people evacuated homes, offices, and commercial buildings as a precautionary measure.

Three pedestrians died in the Bangshal area of Puran Dhaka in the capital when the rooftop railing of a building broke and fell on them during the earthquake. 

Several students in the University of Dhaka (DU) panicked and jumped from windows and rooftops when the earthquake struck.
