5 vehicles slip off ferry, 3 dead

Five vehicles slipped off a ferry which was crossing the Dhaleshwari River in Narayanganj, resulting in three deaths. 

Divers recovered two bodies at around 1:30am on Sunday, police said. Another person died in the hospital while receiving treatment, Narayanganj District Police Addl Superintendent (Ka Circle) Md Hasinuzzaman confirmed. 

The three deceased were identified as expatriate Masud Rana,30, Motorbike rider Md Rafique, 35, and van driver Swadhin, 25. 

The ferry from the east bank of the river was heading towards Boktaboli on the west bank. When the ferry reached mid-river, a truck's engine turned on and it started moving. The truck slipped off the ferry along with two passenger autorickshaws, a three-wheel van, and two motorbikes. The truck's driver was able to survive by swimming to the shore, but three others went missing. 

The ferry reached Boktaboli, and the master informed the police when they sent divers to rescue the missing and monitor the other vehicles leaving the ferry. 

Rafique was rescued first and brought to the Narayanganj General Hospital. He was being rushed to a different hospital for better treatment when he died on the way. 

Divers of the River Police recovered Masud and Swadhin's bodies about four and a half hours later. Masud's lacerated body was found stuck to the propeller of the ferry.
