Dipu Murder: Key suspect Yasin Arafat arrested for leading body burning

Police have arrested Imam Yasin Arafat, 25, identified as the ringleader in the murder of Dipu Chandra Das, 28, a worker at Pioneer Knitwear BD Limited in Bhaluka, Mymensingh. 

Arafat was apprehended in the Sarulia area under Demra police station on Wednesday afternoon with assistance from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

The son of Gazi Mia from the Dakshin Habirbari (Karaitala Moore) area of Bhaluka, Arafat had been in hiding for 12 days, moving between various madrasas across the country following the murder.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Md. Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the arrest to Daily Samakal.

According to police, Yasin played a pivotal role in the incident by gathering people at the Pioneer factory gate with slogans. 

He allegedly incited the agitated crowd to beat Dipu brutally. 

After the fatal beating, police say Arafat led the group that dragged Dipu’s lifeless body with a rope to the Square Masterbari area and set it on fire.

Investigation officers revealed that although Yasin Arafat is a permanent resident of Bhaluka, he had been living in the Kashar area of the upazila for the past 18 months, serving as an Imam at the Sheikhbari Mosque and teaching at the Medina Tahfizul Quran Madrasa. 

Following the murder on December 18, he fled to Dhaka. 

During his time as a fugitive, he stayed at madrasas in Demra and eventually joined 'Suffa Madrasa' as a teacher by concealing his true identity.

The Additional Superintendent of Police noted that 21 people have been arrested in connection with the case so far. Of those, nine have already given confessional statements in court under Section 164.
