9 coaches of 'Nilsagar Express' derail in Santahar, over 100 injured

At least nine coaches of the Chilahati-bound ‘Nilsagar Express’ derailed near Santahar in Bogra today, Wednesday. The accident occurred at approximately 2:40 PM, leaving over a hundred passengers injured.

According to police sources, most of the injured were traveling on the rooftop of the train. Following the derailment, rail communication between Dhaka and northern Bengal has been suspended.

Mahfuzur Rahman, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Santahar Railway Police, stated, "The Nilsagar Express arrived at Santahar station from Dhaka around 2:00 PM. The train derailed shortly after departing the station, with a total of nine coaches veering off the tracks."

He further added, "No fatalities have been reported so far. However, many people were injured after falling from the rooftop, as the train was heavily crowded. Rescue operations are currently underway to recover the derailed coaches."

Meanwhile, Mehdi Hasan, Superintendent of Police (SP) for Pakshi Railway District, confirmed that a relief train has been dispatched from Ishwardi Junction to the accident site to begin salvage operations.
