Cylinder explosion in Mymensingh, 39 hospitalised after falling ill

A sudden explosion occurred while cutting an old gas cylinder in Mymensingh. At least 39 people were hospitalised after the gas leaked out. However, no fire broke out in the explosion.

According to local sources, the accident occurred on Monday evening at a scrapyard shop next to Maitree Tower in Gulpukurpar in the city. 

Eyewitnesses said that an old gas cylinder suddenly exploded with a loud sound while cutting it. After the explosion, the entire area was filled with a strong smell of gas and panic spread among the locals.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital Police Outpost Jawaidul Haque confirmed that 39 people were hospitalised after falling ill. 

He said that they came to the hospital with various problems including breathing problems due to the strong smell of gas. Many of them have returned home after receiving primary treatment. However, two or one are undergoing treatment. Their condition is critical.

Mymensingh Fire Service Deputy Director Md. Jane Alam said that they visited the scene after receiving the news. 

He said that the accident occurred due to leakage of gas while cutting the cylinder. However, fortunately, no fire broke out. 

Residents of the surrounding area fell ill due to the strong smell of gas. Fire service personnel brought the situation under control.

An investigation committee has been formed by the local administration in this incident. An investigation will be conducted to find out how and by whom the cylinder was being cut. 

Mymensingh Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Ashraful Karim said that it will also be investigated whether the necessary safety measures are taken while cutting old cylinders in shops.
