Heavy rains lead to knee-deep waterlogging in Chattogram

Heavy rains have caused knee-deep waterlogging in low-lying areas of Chattogram, leaving city dwellers in significant distress. 

In some locations, water has accumulated to knee-deep levels, while other spots saw even deeper flooding. A total of 330.8 millimetres of rain was recorded in Patenga over the past 24 hours. 

Continuous rains throughout Monday night meant residents woke up to water flowing through streets and low-lying zones. 

The situation has been worsened by the coincidence of hill slopes and high Karnaphuli tides, raising fears of landslides. 

The Meteorological Office has issued warnings for waterlogging and potential landslides due to the heavy rainfall. 

Low-lying areas across the city are submerged, with water entering homes, shops, and business establishments in many places. This has led to both suffering and financial losses for residents. 

Traffic movement has been severely disrupted due to waterlogging on major roads. Public transport services have decreased significantly, and fewer private cars are on the streets. 

Areas including Patenga, Halishahar, Rampura, Agrabad, Gate No. 2, Katalganj, Chandgaon, Baklia, Prabartak, Bepari Para, and Mohra are experiencing knee-deep water. 

The suffering of professionals, pedestrians, those with urgent needs, and working people has become extreme. Teaching activities and internal examinations have been suspended in many schools. 

Patenga Meteorological Office official Mahmudul Alam reported that 330.8 millimetres of rain fell in the previous 24 hours up to 9am on Tuesday, including 60 millimetres between 6am and 9am. 

He confirmed that signal number three is in effect at sea. Bijan Roy, in-charge of the city's Ambagan Meteorological Centre, stated that 259 millimetres of rain was recorded in Ambagan during the same period. 

City Corporation Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain visited the affected areas in the morning. He acknowledged that heavy rains had caused waterlogging in some low-lying areas and stated that the water would gradually subside.
