Two children die in landslides in Chattogram

Two children have died in separate landslides in Chattogram city and Sitakunda due to incessant rain. 

A woman was injured during the incident.

A child named Sumaiya, 12, died after being buried in a landslide in the Chashma Pahar area of Panchlaish police station in the city on Wednesday afternoon. 

On the same day, 10-month-old Ashraful Islam died in a landslide in the No. 6 community area of Baganbari in Jangal Salimpur of Sitakunda upazila on Wednesday morning. 

The child’s mother, Lamia Akhter, was buried in the landslide and injured in the incident.

The deceased Sumaiya is the daughter of Faruk Hossain, a resident of the Chashma Pahar area. Fire service members recovered her body around 1:30 pm.

Chattogram Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Shah Imran said that after receiving information about the landslide, a fire service team reached the spot and started a rescue operation. 

Although Sumaiya’s parents, who were in the house at the time of the accident, were able to get out, Sumaiya, who was in the next room, could not escape. She died on the spot after being buried under the landslide.

On the other hand, a landslide occurred at around 9 am on Wednesday in the No. 6 community area of Baganbari in Jangal Salimpur, Sitakunda. 

In this incident, 10-month-old Ashraful Islam, son of Moin Uddin, died. 

His mother Lamia Akhter was injured in the same incident when she was buried in the mud. Later, she was treated locally.

Sitakunda Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Fakhrul Islam said that a child died in a landslide in the No. 6 community area of Chinnamul in Jangal Salimpur. 

After receiving the news, administration officials went to the spot. Tk25,000 has been provided as assistance for the treatment of the injured child’s mother.

He also said that it has been raining continuously in Sitakunda for the last four days. Due to the fear of landslides, people were being urged to move to safer places through announcements via microphones in different areas of the upazila. 

Despite this, the accident occurred. Many people are still living in risky areas. The administration is continuing its efforts to evacuate them to safe places.
