3-year-old child dies after falling into drain in Chattogram

A three-year-old child died after falling into a drain in Raozan upazila of Chattogram. The incident took place in Ward No. 2 of Dabua Union of the upazila on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased child, Mohammad Mostakim, is the eldest son of Mohammad Parvez Hossain of the area.

According to family and local sources, Mostakim's grandfather, Anwar Hossain, left his house on Wednesday afternoon to go to a local shop. At that time, the child followed his grandfather without the knowledge of the family. At one point, he fell into a water drain next to the road near their house.

Locals said that due to continuous rain, there was a strong current of water in the drain. The child fell into the water accumulated in the nearby agricultural land due to the current. 

Later, a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw driver passing by the road saw the incident and rescued the child.

Later, the locals took him to the hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Local resident Nazim Uddin said, “The child fell into the knee-deep water of the agricultural land from the drain due to the flow of rainwater. He drowned there.” 

Dabua Union Parishad acting chairman Yasmin Akhter said, “The child fell into the drain and was swept away. Later, he was rescued from the water accumulated in the agricultural land. On the way to the Parishad, the child was taken to the hospital in my car. There, the doctor declared him dead.”
