Four children drown in Raipura

Four children drowned in the river in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi while bathing on Thursday afternoon. 

The accident occurred in the Kakon River in the Barakanda area of Chanderkandi union of the upazila.

The four children who died are Tabia, 13, daughter of Shamim Mia of Barakanda village; Zannat Islam, 8, daughter of Rubel Mia of the same area; Asheya, 9, daughter of Rubel Mia; and Sumaiya, 10, daughter of Billal Mia. 

All of them were students of the local Gauchia Noor-e-Madina Mahila Madrasa. Two more children were rescued alive at that time.

According to the families of the deceased and local sources, six or seven children from the madrasa went to bathe in the Kakon River at noon. While trying to save one of them, the others also drowned. Later, people from the area rushed to the spot and rescued the four children and took them to the Raipura Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared them dead.

Raipura Upazila Health Complex Medical Officer Dr Ashrafur Rahman said, “Three of them have been brought here dead.”

In this regard, Raipura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mojibur Rahman said that the bodies of four children have been identified in the drowning incident. Two more children have been rescued alive. 

Further necessary measures will be taken after discussing with the families of the deceased, he added.
