Tortured mother, two daughters get bail; 3 detained

A court in Cox's Bazar has granted bail to three women, who were paraded through villages with their hands tied with rope, following a cattle theft incident took place on Monday at Harbang union in Cox's Bazar's Chakoria.

Judge Rajib Kumar Dev of Cox's Bazar Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court passed the order on Monday morning.

Three women -- Parvin Begum, 40, her daughters Selina Akhter, 28, and Rozina Akhter, 25 - got bail after they were produced before the court. However, Mohammad Arman, 30, and Mohammad Chuttu, 38, were sent to jail after rejecting their bail petition.

An outcry created across the country after a video footage of torture and humiliation of the incident went viral on social media on Saturday night.

The officer-in-charge of Chakaria police station said no one had filed a case on behalf of the tortured women. After being released from prison, if they come to file a case, we will provide all kinds of legal assistance.

On the other hand, many people, including the accused chairman Miranul Islam Miran, went into hiding. 

Chakriya Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court recorded the case on its own initiative on Sunday. 

The court directed Matiul Islam, senior assistant superintendent of police of Chakaria Circle, to investigate the incident and submit a report within seven working days.

Chakaria Upazila Nirbahi Officer Syed Shamsul Tabriz also visited the spot on Sunday. On the other hand, Deputy Commissioner Md Kamal Hossain has formed a three-member investigation committee. 

Srabasti Roy, deputy director of the local government department, has been made the convener of the inquiry committee.

On Sunday night, police arrested three people on suspicion of involvement in the torture.  They are Jasim Uddin, 32, son of Emdad Hossain of Brindabankhil village in Harbang Union, Nazrul Islam, 20, son of Mahbubul Haque and Nasir Uddin, 28, son of Ziabul Haque.

Officer-in-charge of Chakaria Police Station Habibur Rahman told The Daily Samakal that the detainees were sent to Chakaria Judicial Magistrate's Court on Monday.
