8 killed in bus-auto-rickshaw collision

Eight people, including three members of the same family, were killed and at least 10 others injured when a BRTC bus collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Nabiganj in Habiganj on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.

The accident took place at Sataihal on the highway around 4pm on Monday, Nabiganj Police Station (OC) Azizur Rahman said.

Most of the dead were immediately identified as Samirun Begum, 26, and her daughter Maria, 2, Halima Begum, Antar Mia, 22, Liza Akter, and driver Kitab Ali and an unidentified youth.

A Sylhet-bound BRTC Paribahan bus from Comilla collided with an auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction in Sataihal area and the two vehicles fell into a ditch on the side of the road, leaving eight dead on the spot and 1o others injured, said Azizur Rahman.

Sherpur Highway Police Station OC Ershadul Haque said police and fire service carried out rescue operations with the help of locals.

The injured were sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical Hospital for treatment.
