One killed in Syedpur election violence

One person has been killed in a clash between supporters of two councilor candidates in the Syedpur municipality election in Nilphamari.

The clash took place in front of the municipality's women's college centre around 12 noon on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Chhotan Adhikari, 50, of Munsipara area in Syedpur municipality.

Witnesses said that at around 12 noon, a scuffle broke out between the supporters of Nazrul Islam Royal and Akhter Hossain Seku, a candidate for the Ward No 5 of the municipality, which turned into a clash. Three people, including a minor, were injured in the incident. After taking him to the hospital, the doctor declared Chhotan Adhikari dead.

Amidul Islam, a residential medical officer (RMO) at Syedpur 100-bed hospital, said Chhotan Adhikari died before he was brought to the hospital.

Syedpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Hasnat Khan said supporters of the two councilor candidates clashed outside the centre. On information, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control.

However, the OC said that he did not know of any casualties in the incident.
