2 killed in electoral violence in Maheshkhali, Kutubdia, polling postponed

Two people have been killed in election violence at two polling stations in Kutubjum Union of Maheshkhali Upazila and Baraghop Union of Kutubdia Upazila in Cox's Bazar. In this case, polling has been suspended in those centers.

Cox's Bazar District Superintendent of Police Hasanuzzaman told Daily Samakal that a man named Abul Kalam was killed in a shootout between supporters of Awami League boat marker candidate Sheikh Kamal and independent candidate Mosharraf Hossain Khokon on Monday morning.

The deceased Abul Kalam is a supporter of independent candidate (Awami League rebel candidate) Mosharraf Hossain Khokon.

Abul Kalam was brought to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital. He died there around 11:30 am.

Mentioning that five more people were shot in the incident, the OC said that the polling at that center in Ward 5 was postponed immediately after the incident. Police are working to control the situation.

On the other hand, a man named Abdul Halim, 30, was shot dead by the law enforcers at Pilatkata Government Primary School in Ward 5 of Kutubdia Baraghop Union.

Abdul Halim is the son of Mohammad Hossain of Goldarpara area of Baraghop Union and general secretary of ward 7 Awami League.

Kutubdia Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Omar Haider said some people were trying to snatch ballot papers by creating a chaotic atmosphere at the polling station. Abdul Halim was shot by a member of the law enforcement force. He was rescued and taken to Kutubdia Upazila Health Complex where the on duty doctor declared him dead.
