Noakhali rape case: 13 get 10-year imprisonment

A Noakhali court has sentenced ten years rigorous imprisonment to all 13 accused of the infamous rape case of a housewife in Noakhali's Begumganj upazila in September last year. 

Noakhali Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Judge Joynal Abedin Roy handed down the verdict on Tuesday in presence of the 13 accused.

The court also fined Tk50,000 each, in default, they would have to serve three more months in jail.

The rape incident sparked huge outcry across the country.

The convicts are Noor Hossain Badal, Abdur Rahim, Mohammad Ali alias Abul Kalam, Israfil Hossain Miah, Moyeen Uddin Sazu, Shamsuddin Sumon, Abdur Rob Chowdhury, Mostafizur Rahman Arif, Jamal Uddin, Noor Hossain Russel, Mizanur Rahman Tareq, Anwar Hossain Sohag and Delwar Hossain.

On March 24, the same court farmed charges against 13 persons in the case.

On September 2, 2020, a gang of criminals brutally tortured a woman, after breaking into her house in the upazila.

Following the incident that went viral on social media, the victim filed three separate cases in this connection.

On December 15, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) last year submitted a charge-sheet.
