Cumilla councillor murder: Main accused killed in 'gunfight' with police

The prime accused in the murder of Cumilla ward councillor Syed Mohammad Sohel and his aide was killed in a reported gunfight with law enforcers early Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Shah Alam, 28, said Porimol Das, sub-inspector of Detective Branch of Police, Cumilla.

He said acting on a tip-off, a team of detectives and police officials conducted a drive in Beribadh area near Gomoti river around 12:15am.

The accused began firing at the law enforcers sensing their presence forcing retaliation around 1:15am, the official claimed.

After ending of the gunfight Shah Alam was rescued from the spot, he added.

Later, on duty doctor declared him dead soon after he was rushed to Cumilla Medical College Hospital.

Two police officials were also injured in the incident, the SI claimed.
