Passengers held with 4 kg of gold in Shah Amanat

Officials at the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate on Wednesday detained a passenger with more than four kilograms of gold at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong.

The name of the detained passenger Saiful Islam hailed from Lohagara upazila of Chittagong. He arrived in the country on an Air Arabia flight from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

Sources at the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate said that an Air Arabia flight landed at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong after 7.15am this morning. Customs detectives searched the suspect shortly after the plane landed at the airport. Saiful was apprehended from the plane along with the gold bars.

AKM Sultan Mahmud, deputy director of the directorate, said that during the search, 34 gold bars were found wrapped in black tape around the waist of passenger Saiful. Besides, gold ornaments were found in his body. In total, more than four kilograms of gold worth Tk 3 crore 20 lakh were recovered from him.

Legal action is being taken against the detainee.
