Jhumon Das sent to jail in DSA case

A Sunamganj court has sent Jhumon Dash to jail with a statement under section 164 in a case filed under Digital Security Act (DSA).

After taking the statement of Sunamganj Judicial Magistrate Syed Mahbubul Islam in the court on Wednesday afternoon, the court ordered him to be sent to jail. 

Earlier in the morning, he was sent to court in Sunamganj from Shalla police station.

Jhumon Das Apon was sued by the police under the Digital Security Act (DSA)after spending more than 12 hours in custody due to a Facebook post.

Sumonur Rahman, a sub-inspector at Sunamganj's Shalla Police Station, submitted the complaint for "demeaning religion through his Facebook post."

Jhumon was taken into custody from his Noagaon, Shalla upazila, village house at around 11:30am on Tuesday.

Jhumon was produced before a Sunamganj court, showing him to have been detained in the DSA case, according to Officer-in-Charge of Shalla Police Station Aminul Islam.

Police apprehended Jhumon on March 16 of last year as a result of a Facebook post, criticizing Mamunul Haque, the leader of Hefajat-e-Islam. The following day, his community was invaded by tens of thousands of residents, who damaged about 90 Hindu homes.

Md Abdul Karim, a sub-inspector at Shalla Police Station, brought a DSA act complaint against Jhumon six days after his detention.

On September 28 of last year, he was released from prison after six months following the High Court bench's granting of his bail.
