'Diet of the audience should also change with time'

Disappointed with the response to her latest Bengali release ‘Arshinagar’, National Film Award winning director Aparna Sen says she will nevertheless continue to experiment, reports Indian Express.

 

“Obviously, I am not happy with the response. It was well before its time. The audience have a certain type of expectation from me as I have been typecasted. I have got extreme responses for the film. The intellectuals have liked it while others could not understand,” Sen said.

 

Released on December 25, ‘Arshinagar’ is a modern Bengali adaptation of the classic ‘Romeo and Juliet’.

 

The film has now been selected to be part of the ‘Cinema Indien Festival’ to be held in Sweden this April as part of ‘India Unlimited’ program.

 

When asked, she said she had not been left discouraged after the release.

“No I’ll continue to make the films I want to. If my next script demands some kind of experiment in storytelling I will do it for sure. I do not want to keep doing the same type of films,” said the 70-year-old ‘Padma Shri’ who has won the National Film Award twice for the best director.

 

She is best known for making cinematic gems like ’36 Chowringhee Lane’ (1981), ‘Mr and Mrs Iyer’ (2001) and ’15 Park Avenue’ (2005).

 

Sen said the diet of the audience should also change with time.
