'Sultan Utsab' begins in Narail this afternoon

A three-day 'Sultan Utsab' in celebration of the 92th birth anniversary of world renowned artist SM Sultan will start in front of Sultan Mancha on Narail Government Victoria College premises this afternoon, reports the BSS.

 

The SM Sultan Shishu Charu O Karukala Foundation and the Bengal Foundation are organizing the Utsab. All preparations have been completed for holding the Utsab, said SM Sultan Shishu Charu O Karukala Foundation President Sheikh Hanif.

 

Deputy commissioner of Narail, also SM Sultan Foundation's President Helal Mahmud Sharif, will attend the inauguration ceremony as the chief guest.

 

Prof. Sumon Pal, principal of Kolkata Art College, will attend the concluding ceremony on Thursday, Hanif said.

 

A seminar on Sultan's life and work and cultural programmes will be held as part of the Utsab at Sultan Mancha.

 

A total of 75 stalls displaying traditional textiles and cottage industries products have been set up on Sultan Mancha premises, said SM Sultan Shishu Charu O Karukala Foundation's Member Secretary Artist Bimanesh Chandra Biswas.

 

Artworks of SM Sultan were displayed at Simla in India in 1946 and Lahore and Karachi in the then West Pakistan in 1948-49. His paintings were exhibited in New York, Boston, London and Michigan in 1959.

 

Sultan, a legendary artist of Bangladesh, won Ekushey Padak in 1982, Bangladesh Charu Shilpi Sangsad Award in 1986 and Swadhinata Padak in 1993. He was declared Man of Asia in 1982 by Cambridge University and Bangladesh government declared him the Resident Artist in 1984.

 

Sultan died on 10 October, 1994, at Jessore Combined Military Hospital.
