Actor Ahmed Rubel no more

Noted actor Ahmed Rubel has passed away on Wednesday evening.

Director Nurul Alam Atique said Rubel died of cardiac arrest around 6pm.

He said, “This evening there was a special screening of my new movie 'Pearar Subas'. Ahmed Rubel fell ill just before going to attend this exhibition. Later, when he was taken to a private hospital in the capital, the doctor on duty declared him dead.”

Ahmed Rubel had great roles in theatre, movies, and television. Selim Al Deen formed ‘Dhaka Theatre,’ where he first appeared on stage. He thereafter concentrated on playing leading roles in popular commercial films, making an appearance in six of them. He therefore left his position in the film industry to concentrate on teledramas.

Rubel started his professional career as an actor with Selim Al Deen's theatrical company, ‘Dhaka Theatre’. He thereafter began to act in commercial Bengali films. After playing a negative role in Aakhri Hamla, he starred in another movie.

He went back to the theatre to continue work on the play Bonopangshul. Subsequently, he began to watch television shows directed by Aatiqul Huq Chowdhury. But his first on screen appearance was in Giyasuddin Selim's Swapnojatra. 

He later appeared in Humayun Ahmed's Eid drama Poka as Ghora Mojid. He made his television debut in the Pret series on Ekushey. Based on Muhammad Zafar Iqbal's book of the same name, Pret was directed by Aahir Alam. 

He continued working in television, collaborating with individuals such as Mostofa Sarwar Faruqui. 

He also contributed to Humayun Ahmed's film Shyamol Chhaya, which was inspired by the Bangladesh Liberation War.
