Folk singer legend Farida Parveen no more

Renowned folk singer Farida Parveen has passed away at 10:15 pm on Saturday, her daughter Jihan Fariha confirmed to Daily Samakal.

Farida had been battling kidney and liver ailments for an extended period, requiring dialysis twice weekly.

On September 2, she was admitted to Universal Medical College Hospital in Mohakhali for routine dialysis.

However, her condition worsened post-dialysis, leading to her admission to the ICU. Last Wednesday, her health declined further, and she was placed on ventilation. 

Born on December 31, 1954 in Singra of Natore, Farida Parveen dedicated 55 years to music. She began her professional career in 1968 at age 14. Initially performing Nazrul music and modern songs, she devoted much of her life to singing the songs of Lalon Sai, practicing Lalon music extensively in Kushtia.

Farida was honored with the Ekushey Padak in 1987 for her contributions to Lalon music. She also received the National Film Award for Best Female Singer in 1993 for the song Nindar Kanta from the film Andho Prem. In 2008, she was awarded the Fukuoka Prize in Japan.

Her renditions of modern and folk songs, including Tomra Bhule Gecho Mallikadir Naam and Ei Padma Ei Meghna, gained widespread popularity.
