Actor Zaher Alvi sent to jail

A Dhaka court has sent popular small screen actor Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan alias Zaher Alvi to jail in a case filed against him for allegedly inciting his wife Afra Ibnat Iqra to commit suicide. 

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin issued the order on Thursday.

Alvi surrendered to the court on the day after applying for bail through his lawyers. After the hearing, the court rejected the application and ordered him to be sent to jail.

Lawyer Anwar Zahid Bhuiyan, president of the Dhaka Bar Association, represented Zaher Alvi in the hearing. On the other hand, the plaintiff’s lawyers rejected his bail application and heard the application to send him to jail.

The case was filed against him on February 25 while he was in Nepal to produce a play for Eid.

The case alleges that on February 28, Iqra was rescued by her family members from her Mirpur DOHS house, hanging from a ceiling fan with a veil. 

Later, the owner of the house and her relatives took her to Kurmitola Hospital, where the doctor declared her dead. 

Iqra’s father Kabir Hayat Khan filed the case that night. 

The case alleges that Iqra was forced to commit suicide due to long-standing family feuds and various forms of torture.

Alvi and Iqra got married in 2010 after falling in love. They have a son.
