Kristen Stewart still 'queen' of the Cannes

After festival boobirds made noise at the first press screening Monday for her starring role in the Cannes film Personal Shopper, Stewart responded right back with a glam attack that culminated in a rapturous red carpet premiere Tuesday night, reports the UNB.

 

Stewart owned the carpet in a feather-filled dress, switched out of her high heels for sneakers after walking the carpet and did a happy dance before entering the Palais des Festivals theater for the official premiere.

 

The Tuesday night response was a healthy four-minute ovation for Personal Shopper, her latest collaboration with French director Olivier Assayas.

 

The duo had already verbally shrugged off the boos at a news conference Tuesday when Assayas said, "When you come to Cannes, you’re prepared for anything really. You just go with the flow."

 

"Everyone did not boo. Let’s be clear," Stewart added laughing.

 

She went on to discuss how proud she is of the collaboration with Assayas, who directed her to 2014 Cannes success alongside Juliette Binoche in The Clouds of Sils Maria. The role earned Stewart a César Award for best supporting actress, the first American actress to win the French film prize.

 

"There's a flame he lights under my (butt) that is stronger than I have ever felt," Stewart said of Assayas at the press conference in her typical candor, prompting laughter from the journalists.

 

The premiere Tuesday capped off a whirlwind week in which Stewart starred in two Cannes films, including Woody Allen's opening night film Cafe Society. Stewart was a stunning standout on Cannes carpets throughout her stay.

 

Festival director Thierry Frémaux called Stewart "the queen of Cannes this year" (alongside French actress Marion Cotillard who also has two films).

 

"(Stewart) is respected because she goes to the unexpected and she knows how to choose roles. She is capable of being a movie star or an actress starring in arthouse films," said Frémaux. "We love her a lot."

 

Stewart success has almost allowed her to pull away entirely from her Twilight past, the vampire franchise which shot her to fame. These Twilight questions still come up, but with much less regularity.

 

"It's funny, the Twilight question is genuinely not something that bothers me, it's not something I think about," said Stewart, when asked about the occurrences by USA TODAY. "But when I hear the question I totally have to step outside of myself and think, 'I see what you guys see.' But for me that's another movie I did. I'm into every single movie just as the other one."

 

Stewart added that she is blown away by the Cannes experience.

 

"I'm definitely reveling in it. I'm absolutely floating," said Stewart. "The fact I can put one little pinkie fingernail into this part of history is pretty mind-blowing."
