BNP can hold rally in Tongi or Purbachal if it wants: DMP

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will not have any objection if the BNP wants to hold its rally at the international trade fair ground in Purbachal or at the Biswa Ijtema ground in Tongi on December 10.

DMP spokesperson Md Faruk Hossain made the disclosure in a press conference held at DMP Media Center on Tuesday.

The police official said, “DMP has given permission for the rally of BNP at Suhrawardy Udyan in the city. Not agreeing to that, BNP leaders have proposed an alternative venue. A proposal has been made by BNP to the DC of Motijheel Division for an alternative venue at Arambagh in the capital. However, the proposal did not formally come to the office of DMP Commissioner.”

Stating that no alternative venue has been thought of by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, he said that since permission has been given in Suhrawardy Udyan, the DMP has remained at that location so far. DMP will not allow street rallies.

The police officer also said that the DMP has taken the necessary activities to keep the law and order situation normal around the BNP rally.

In response to a question whether BNP has mentioned any reason behind not wanting to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan, Faruk Hossain said that they are feeling a security threat. 

“It has been said by the DMP that all assistance will be provided to keep law and order under control around the gathering,” he continued.
