AL-BNP clash in Patuakhali injures 50

At least 50 individuals from both Awami League (AL) and Bangladesh National Party (BNP) were injured in a clash which broke out in Patuakhali on Saturday.

The clash resulted from a gathering as part of BNP's countrywide programme in front of the BNP office in the Banani area of Patuakhali city. It continued from 10am to 11:30pm.

Several motorcycles were vandalised and brickbats were thrown as well. Police charged batons and shot three rounds of tear shells to bring the situation under control.

Around 250-300 leaders and activists were injured in the clash, BNP claimed. On the other hand, AL claimed that 15-20 of their men were injured.

"A clash between the two parties took place centring BNP's programme. But the situation is under control now," Patuakhali Police Superintendent Md Saidul Islam said.
