Awami League celebrates its 74th founding anniversary

Bangladesh Awami League, the leading political party of Bangladesh, has celebrated its 74th founding anniversary on Friday.

Awami League led the country's independence through the 1971 Great Liberation War in 1971.

Awami Muslim League was founded on June 23, 1949, at Rose Garden in the city's Old Dhaka.

Later, to give it a secular appearance, the party debuted as Bangladesh Awami League (AL).

To commemorate its founding anniversary, the AL has organized elaborate events.

The party is set to hoist the national and party flags at central and regional party offices at daybreak and pay tribute at Bangabandhu's portrait at 7 am.

A discussion was held at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) at 3:30 pm with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

A delegation from the AL Central Executive Committee also paid respect to Bangabandhu, the greatest Bangalee of all time, by laying wreaths at his grave at Tungipara at 10.30am as part of the day's events.

In a message delivered on Thursday to commemorate the party's founding anniversary, AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recalled the party's role in the emergence of Bangladesh and all democratic movements. 

One of the nation's oldest, largest, and most influential political parties is the Awami League, which is also non-communal. 

The Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, also began the process of creating a non-communal Bangladesh.

When it was founded, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was incarcerated. However, he was later appointed joint general secretary.
