Preventing electoral malpractice a constitutional duty: DMP

It is a citizen's right to choose to vote or not to vote. It is a constitutional duty to prevent those who try to stop others from voting, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Habibur Rahman said on Monday.

"Voting is a democratic right, similarly not voting is also a democratic right. However, preventing vote is not a democratic right. It is the constitutional duty of every citizen, people's representative, and law enforcers to prevent those who try to prevent others from voting," he said.

He made the remark while talking to journalists after a view-exchange meeting with councillors.

In response to a question, Habibur Rahman added that there is no specific risk of terrorism centring the upcoming polls.
