US Deputy Assistant Secy Afreen meets BNP leaders

Afreen Akhter, US Department of State deputy assistant secretary for South and Central Asia, has met top BNP leaders on Saturday afternoon.

However, the party did not want to say anything officially about the meeting.

This meeting started at Westin Hotel in Gulshan of the capital at 3 pm and ended at 4:20pm.

"Engaging in constructive dialogue is key to understanding different perspectives and finding common ground," US Embassy wrote in X, formerly Tweeter.

A photo shows that Afreen Akhter and US Ambassador Peter Haas talking to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

"We welcomed a fruitful discussion with @bdbnp78 's Secretary General about the current political landscape in Bangladesh and the thousands of opposition members in prison. Looking forward to continued engagement," the embassy said.

In response to a question from the journalists, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said, "They invited us, we came, we talked."

When asked whether there was any talk about the election or not, Amir Khosru said, “Not only the election but various issues were talked about. But we don't want to say anything.”
