No scope for reforms outside of consensus: Amir Khasru

BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said there is no room for reforms outside of consensus.

He was speaking to reporters after a meeting between BNP's Liaison Committee and Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) at the Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan on Sunday. 

He remarked, "We’re not forming BaKSAL (Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League) in the country. Everyone has to agree, those who think about it - this is a thought of pro-BaKSAL, which Sheikh Hasina did. Parties have diverse ideologies and views. Reforms must stem from consensus; anything beyond that requires a democratic electoral process and public mandate. Why aren’t agreed-upon issues being presented to the nation?" 

Khasru added, "Proposals have been submitted, and discussions are complete. It should take no more than a week to identify consensus issues. The nation deserves transparency on this. We can then sign the charter and proceed to elections. It’s straightforward. Without a clear electoral roadmap, public doubts grow, which harms democracy and future elections."

Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury (liaison committee head), Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku and Barkat Ullah Bulu took part in the meeting on behalf of BNP, said BNP Media Cell in a Facebook post.

BJP Chairman Barrister Andaleeve Rahman Partho led his party delegation comprising Matin Saud, Kazi Mostafa Tamzid, Washiqur Rahman, Salauddin Matin, Sohel Asif, ABM Azizul Haque, Advocate Golam Rabbani, Asadur Rahman and Faisal Taher.
