BNP questions delay in elections; urges vote by October: Amir Khasru

BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury warned that delaying elections is pushing Bangladesh toward greater instability.

Speaking at a press conference on contemporary issues in Banani, Dhaka, on Sunday, he questioned the need to hold the elections in December.

He stated as saying, "I see no reason to delay until December. Three months are enough to hold elections, which can take place in August, September, or October."

Khasru highlighted the nation's growing anxiety and uncertainty, mentioning that while the country has moved away from dictatorship, the expected democratic process has not been realised. 

He slammed the interim government for acting like an elected one, emphasising that its primary role is to ensure a fair and participatory election and transfer power to an elected government.

Expressing concerns over the government's decisions on corridors, ports, and investment conferences, Khasru questioned their legitimacy over the issues.

He also raised alarms about the non-implementation of a court order regarding the Dhaka South City Corporation mayor. He said, "If court orders are ignored, it raises questions about the rule of law and whose interests’ state institutions serve."

Khasru stressed the need for consensus and reforms but raised questions with whom the government is building this consensus. 

He focused for stable, cooperative politics in Bangladesh, opposing any moves toward conflict-driven politics. 

"All future elections must follow a fair, democratic process and become routine," he said.

He, however, alleged that the government's actions are eroding public trust, which he called unfortunate for the nation.

Addressing the issue of banning the Awami League, Khasru noted that BNP had raised this two months ago, suggesting for a legal process. 

He questioned why the government staged a "drama" over the issue, reflecting public skepticism about its intentions.
