Mobocracy prevailing in Bangladesh instead of democracy: Salahuddin Ahmed

Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, described the current state of governance in Bangladesh as a "mobocracy" rather than a democracy. 

Speaking as the chief guest at a protest rally organised by Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal in front of the BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan, he expressed concerns over the state of law and order.

"We fought in the July uprising for democracy, but what we see now across the country is mobocracy prevailing," Salahuddin stated. 

He attributed this situation to the interim government’s indifference and its failure to maintain law and order, which he said has allowed challenges to the forces of the mass uprising.

Condemning recent attacks on pro-democracy groups, Salahuddin remarked, "We never anticipated that defeated fascist forces would dare to attack those who support the spirit of the mass uprising. These attacks stem from the emotional and unplanned political programmes announced by some newly formed, unregistered political parties." 

He urged political newcomers to gain experience and contribute positively to the country’s democratic future.

Salahuddin emphasised the BNP’s cooperation with the interim government formed on August 8, 2024, but noted that deliberate issues are being created to tarnish the party’s image. 

He expressed disappointment over the lack of progress on the electoral timeline.

He said, "We expected the chief Adviser, following the London meeting, to direct the Election Commission to prepare for elections in early February. Instead, instructions were given to law enforcement, but the Election Commission has received no formal directive."

He called on the chief Adviser to promptly reassure the nation and issue clear instructions to the Election Commission to organise elections. 

Salahuddin reiterated BNP’s commitment to supporting the government, stressing that those attempting to disrupt the election process should receive no support. 

"The public must never feel the government is favoring any specific party," he added.

The Jubo Dal organised the rally to protest the deteriorating law and order situation, attributing it to the interim government’s inaction. 

Following the rally, a protest march proceeded from Nayapaltan through Nightingale intersection, Bijoynagar, Paltan, the Press Club, Kadam Fountain, Matsya Bhaban, and concluded at Shahbagh. 

The event was chaired by Jubo Dal President Abdul Monayem Munna.

Similar rallies and marches were held by Jubo Dal in various districts and metropolitan areas across Bangladesh to echo these demands.
