'If there was no mass uprising, you would not have dreamed of elections'

National Citizens Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam said iIf there was no mass uprising, you would not have dreamed of elections.

“Many say that we are trying to postpone the elections. However, if there was no mass uprising, you would not have dreamed of elections. If we had not taken the movement from the quota reform movement to a mass uprising and the fall of the government, Sheikh Hasina would have waited for another four years under the government.”

He said, “Of course we want elections, we want voting rights, we want to ensure expression like the people.”

He said these things at a rally after participating in the ‘Desh Gartay July Padayatra’ at Faujdari More in Jamalpur city on Monday afternoon.

Nahid Islam also said, “A financial policy of extortion has developed in the political parties of Bangladesh and, unfortunately, various leaders and activists of the anti-discrimination student movement have been included in this economy of extortion. An attempt is being made to extort by changing the name of the anti-discrimination student movement and the name of the NCP. We have clearly stated that we will start the struggle we have started against the extortionists-terrorists from within. For this reason, we had called for the dissolution of the anti-discrimination student movement committee after the announcement of the National Citizens Party (NCP)."

He also said, "For the last 17 years, no one has been able to do politics freely in Jamalpur. Politics was hostage to a godfather. We have freed the people from that hostage situation. Therefore, you will come forward to build the country by supporting the politics of the NCP."

The rally was addressed by the central leader of the NCP, Lutfar Rahman, Dr. Tasnim Zara, Nasiruddin Patwari and other local and national leaders.
