Jamaat-e-Islami calls for ban on Jatiya Party, citing alliance with Awami League

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has proposed banning the activities of the Jatiya Party, drawing parallels with the recent ban on the Awami League. 

On Sunday, following a meeting with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the Jamuna state guest house, Jamaat’s Nayeeb-e-Ameer and former MP Dr. Syed Abdullah Md. Taher addressed the media, stating, “Just as the fascist Awami League’s activities have been banned, a similar decision can be made regarding the Jatiya Party, which acted as its ally.”

Dr. Taher condemned the recent attack on Nurul Haque Nur, President of Gono Odhikar Parishad, describing it as “despicable” and a “deep conspiracy.” 

He urged the Chief Adviser to take strict action against those responsible and highlighted the Jatiya Party’s role as an ally of the Awami League, reinforcing the call for a potential ban.

Commenting on the July Charter, Dr. Taher noted that all political parties have reached a consensus on 19 key issues, marking significant progress. 

However, he expressed concern that a few parties are obstructing the legal implementation of these agreements, suggesting that reforms should be enacted by the next elected government. 

“If the next government is to implement these, why did we spend time in the Consensus Commission?” he questioned. 

He emphasised the need for immediate legal backing for the reforms, stating, “Our charter has three parts: reaching consensus, establishing a legal basis, and implementation. Some parties are blocking the legal basis for our agreed-upon issues.”

Dr. Taher stressed the importance of unity in the spirit of the July Revolution, advocating for the promised minimum reforms to be legally enacted now. 

The Jamaat-e-Islami delegation, led by Dr. Taher, included Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Parwar, Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan, and former MP Dr. Hamidur Rahman Azad. 

The delegation met with Dr. Yunus at 4:15 pm to discuss the 13th parliamentary elections and the current political situation.
