Interim govt must act as caretaker before elections: Mirza Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that the current interim government should immediately function as a caretaker government ahead of the upcoming national elections.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting at Jamuna State Guest House, the official residence of the chief adviser, on Tuesday, he emphasised the need for this transition to ensure the elections scheduled for February next year are credible and impartial.

“To make the elections meaningful, the interim government must adopt the role of a caretaker government from now on,” he said. 

“The first priority is to fully neutralise the administration to restore public trust,” he added.

He added that BNP has demanded the removal of officials still in the Secretariat who are allegedly aligned with the previous “fascist” regime, and their replacement with neutral appointees. 

Similar steps, he said, should be taken in district-level administration, where many officials continue to serve the interests of the ousted government.

Neutrality in Police and Judiciary

Mirza Fakhrul further urged neutral measures in police recruitment and promotions, particularly for new or elevated positions. 

Regarding the judiciary, he called for the removal of judges—especially in the High Court—associated with the previous regime and their replacement with impartial ones.

“Though judicial matters are independent, since the chief adviser oversees overall governance, we have conveyed these demands to him,” he noted.

Government Must Remain Neutral

The BNP leader stressed that the interim government must maintain complete neutrality. 

“If any individual with political affiliations is part of the government, they should be removed,” he said, describing this as a key demand.

When asked if he had named any specific adviser, Mirza Fakhrul replied in the negative.

Earlier, a three-member BNP delegation led by Mirza Fakhrul met Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at 6:00 pm. 

The delegation included Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Salah Uddin Ahmed. The meeting concluded at 7:11 pm.
