Interim Govt should adopt caretaker role: Amir Khasru

BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury urged the interim government to operate impartially as a caretaker government, emphasising the need to ensure fair elections to restore democracy. 

He was speaking as the chief guest at a discussion on the upcoming parliamentary elections’ role in safeguarding Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty, held at the National Press Club’s Abdus Salam Hall on Wednesday.

Amir Khasru highlighted the instability caused by 15 months without an elected government. 

The event was jointly organsed by the Nationalist Freedom Fighters Party and the Liberation War Generation.

Khasru criticised the lack of accountability across government sectors, including officials, law enforcement, administration, and education. 

He noted that some individuals within the interim government are influencing appointments and promotions, undermining impartiality. 

He warned that such actions could discredit the government and stressed that it must limit itself to routine administrative tasks, avoiding major decisions to maintain public trust.

He emphasised that the absence of an elected government has created pressure across state sectors, with officials who should resign still in office, complicating administration. 

Amir Khasru called for the swift return of people’s ownership through elections, stating that only impartial polls can pave the way for democracy.

Reiterating BNP’s commitment to peaceful democratic change, Khasru said the party is focused on presenting its manifesto and demands to the public. 

He also firmly opposed foreign interference in Bangladesh’s internal affairs.

The discussion, chaired by Muktijoddha Dal co-chairman Ishtiaq Aziz Ulfat, was also addressed by BNP Chairperson’s adviser Advocate Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, valiant freedom fighter Colonel Zainul Abedin, and Muktijoddha Dal vice-president Alamgir Hossain Masud, among others.
