Yunus govt will bear responsibility for any election delays: Mirza Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir warned the interim government's chief adviser, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, that any disruption to the election process beyond necessary reforms would make his administration accountable.

"Dr. Yunus, you are committed to the people. Hold elections after completing the required reforms. An acceptable parliament, elected by the people, will then enact those reforms. Any deviation from this path will place full responsibility on your government," Fakhrul stated.

He made the remarks during a publication ceremony at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Criticising the Consensus Commission's recommendations released on Tuesday for implementing the July Charter, Fakhrul said, "To my astonishment, the commitment to include BNP's Note of Dissent in the charter has been omitted. This deceives both the public and political parties. These issues must be rectified immediately."

He emphasised that reforms should be finalised through a legitimately elected parliament, adding, "The later the elections are delayed, the stronger fascism grows. Those supporting postponement are the ones who desire anarchy."
