No obligation to accept government decisions outside July Charter: BNP

The BNP has stated that any decision by the interim government beyond the July Charter will not bind the Charter's signatories.

Speaking at a press conference at the BNP Chairperson's Gulshan Political Office in Dhaka on Tuesday, Standing Committee member Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said, "If the government announces any decision outside the July National Charter, no signatory party is obliged to accept it. The government will bear full responsibility. We urge careful steps."

The press conference followed Monday night's National Standing Committee meeting, chaired virtually by Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman from London.

Dr. Mosharraf added, "The July National Charter, finalised after nearly a year of discussions by the National Consensus Commission with political parties—including notes of dissent—was signed on October 17. All parties committed to its implementationas  per the constitution and laws."

He criticised recent statements by some interim government advisers on issues outside the Charter as "misleading" and contrary to consensus-based decisions.

Present at the press conference were Mirza Abbas, Dr. Abdul Moyeenn Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, and Major General Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.
