Former minister, freedom fighter engineer Mosharraf Hossain passes away

Former minister, freedom fighter and Awami League presidium member Engineer Mosharraf Hossain has passed away. 

He died at 10:15 am on Wednesday at Square Hospital in the capital (Innalillahi wa inna ilahi raji'un). 

He had been undergoing treatment there for a few days due to various complications related to old age. He was 83 years old.

Engineer Mosharraf Hossain’s son Sabedur Rahman Sumu confirmed the news of his father’s death. He said the namaz-e-janaza will be held after Asr on Thursday at Mahajanhat Fazlur Rahman School and College ground in Mirsarai upazila of Chittagong.

 Another namaz-e-janaza will be held in Dhaka, though the place and time have not yet been finalised.

This former MP from the Chittagong-1 (Mirsarai) constituency served as Minister of Housing and Public Works and Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism in the Awami League government at various times. He was elected MP in 1973, 1986, 1996, 2008, 2014 and 2018. He was one of the framers of the Constitution in 1972.

After the fall of the Awami League government in the July 2024 movement, he was arrested from the Bhatara area of the capital on October 27 that year and later taken to Chittagong Central Jail. On the night of August 5, 2025, when he fell seriously ill, he was admitted to Bangladesh Medical University Hospital from the prison hospital and was released on bail on 14 August 2025.

Engineer Mosharraf Hossain was born on 12 January 1943 in Dhum Union of Mirsarai Upazila. His father, Late S. Rahman, was a member of the then Provincial Council. 

Mosharraf Hossain obtained a bachelor’s degree in minerals from Lahore in 1966. He was elected president of the East Pakistan Students’ Union in 1964 and joined the Six-Point Movement of East Pakistan students in Lahore in 1966.

In the 1970 elections, he was elected a member of the then East Pakistan Provincial Council from Mirsarai. In 1971, he led the guerrilla war as sub-sector commander of Chittagong during the Liberation War. In recognition of his contribution, the government awarded him the Swadhinata Puraskar in 2019.
