Tofail Ahmed no more

Awami League leader and former minister Tofail Ahmed has passed away on Monday. He was 82.

The veteran AL leader breathed his last at 3:50 pm while undergoing treatment at the capital's Square Hospital,

The Square Hospital authorities and his family have confirmed the matter to the media.

The hospital authorities said in a press release that Tofail Ahmed was admitted to the hospital on September 24 with pneumonia-related breathing problems, heart disease and physical weakness.

His son-in-law Dr. Touhiduzzaman Tuhin said that Tofail Ahmed had been suffering from various complications related to old age for a long time. At the time of his death, he left behind a daughter and numerous well-wishers.

Tofail was born on October 22, 1943, in Koralia village of Dakhin Dighaldi Union of Bhola Sadar Upazila. From 1967 to 1969, he was the VP of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU). He played a leading role in the mass uprising of 1969.

In the 1970 elections, at the age of 27, Tofail Ahmed was elected as a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan. He was elected as a member of parliament nine times. He also served as a minister several times. 

Tofail Ahmed was a member of the advisory council of the banned Awami League.
